Manufactured by: Glaxo
Active Ingredients:
Aciclovir 5%
General:
Many adults and children carry a virus which causes cold sores. Although the virus does not bother them most of the time, certain things, eg. Times of stress or illness, will make it active
Each attack of the virus causes sores around the mouth or nose. They start as red itchy patches and become open weepy sores that form crusty scabs which then crack
What Causes Cold Sores?
Cold sores are caused by the virus herpes simplex. This virus is very common
Most people who get cold sores will have caught the virus as young children or as teenagers
What Are The Symptoms?
- A tingling, burning or itchy feeling where the sore is going to appear. You should ideally start treatment as soon as you get these feelings
- A red swollen patch, which turns into a blister or a group of blisters over the next 24 hours. The blisters can be very painful and make it difficult to eat or talk. Treatment at this stage can reduce the duration of the cold sore
- Without treatment in the next few days the blisters become sores which are very painful as they begin to weep or crack
- In a week or so the sores dry up and form a yellow-brown crust. The crust soon falls off and does not leave a scar
- The cold sore should have completely healed and disappeared 10-14 days after it began, They can be spread from the time the first tingling or burning is felt, until the crust has dried
How Can You Stop A Cold Sore Spreading To Others?
Avoid skin contact, eg. Kissing, touching or picking the cold sore, especially when it has blistered. Do not break your cold sore blister
- Be careful not to touch the cold sore then rub your eyes. Take extra care if you wear contact lenses and when applying or removing make-up. If your eye becomes red, watery and sensitive to light, see your doctor right away
- Use your own eating and drinking utensils, towels and face cloths when you have a cold sore
- Avoid sharing lipsticks or lip balms. Wipe lipstick testers before using them, and preferably test them on your hand rather than lips
- Wash your hands thoroughly if you touch the cold sore and after you have bathed and treated it
See Your Doctor If:
A cold sore spreads from your lips or around your mouth and nose to other parts of your face, or if cold sores appear on other parts of your body
If you need further advice or treatment talk to your pharmacist or doctor
Dosage:
Apply acyclovir pump up to 5 times per day as soon as you feel a cold sore starting. If you start the treatment early, it is more likely to stop the cold sore developing. Keep applying the cream 5 times a day during waking hours, for 5 days. There is enough cream for several cold sore attacks.
After the blisters have broken out, keep the area clean and dry. Bathe the area with warm water then pat it dry with paper tissues
Follow the instructions very carefully when applying a cold sore cream or other treatment products. Avoid the eyes and inside of the nose or mouth. Wash your hands before and after you have applied the cold sore treatment
